This film showcases a long-term collaborative project that culminated with the use of participatory scenarios to explore the future of the social-ecological system of the Ungava Bay region and its fisheries by 2080. Scenarios are plausible stories about the future that combine different types of information, from climate models to Inuit Knowledge. Here, scenarios explored how the sea, fisheries (with a focus on Arctic Char), and Nunavimmiut might respond to future changes in two generations from now, or by 2080, and how to foster resilience and desirable outcomes into the future, including sustainable fisheries. Scenarios emerged from a series of participatory activities over two years, which culminated in a three-day workshop in Aupaluk in March 2024 bringing together representatives from five communities and other actors. The film presents the process for co-developing scenarios and its outcomes, as well as perspectives from Inuit participants.
Produced by Marianne Falardeau with the support of filmmaker Lisa Bolduc, this film highlights a collaborative approach to envisioning the future and informing today’s planning.
This research was largely funded by Genome Canada (FISHES project) and the Belmont Forum (MARAT project).
